Commuter Pass as an Employee Benefit<\/h2><\/div>
Commuting to and from work isn\u2019t just time-consuming. It can also take up a significant portion of one\u2019s income. In the segment \u201cPublic Transportation as an Employee Benefit\u201d at Persontrafik, the president of the Vision union, Sk\u00e5netrafiken, and Resen\u00e4rerna highlight how subsidized commuter passes can benefit employees, employers, and society as a whole. \n\nWithin the Vision labor union, subsidized commuter passes are a popular benefit among its 222,000 members.\n\u2013 As the cost of living rises, how people get to work becomes an important issue. Most of our members spend a significant portion of their income on commuting, which is why there is great interest in discounted public transportation passes,\u201d says Vision Union President Veronica Magnusson, who kicks off the session on public transportation as an employee benefit. \n\n\u2013 Our members also want to do their part to help the climate, and depending on how public transportation works, they can use their commute time to work or to relax. So there are several interrelated factors that make the issue of discount cards an interesting one. \nIn Sk\u00e5ne, companies have been able to offer commuting as an employee benefit for several years now. The program is called F\u00f6retag Komplett and provides companies with discounts on commuter passes and on-board advertising with Sk\u00e5netrafiken. According to Sk\u00e5netrafiken, which will be presenting the initiative, it\u2019s a way to increase employee satisfaction, reduce the number of parking spaces, and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. \n\u201cThis is in line with the goal of enabling more people to use public transportation. Many people also appreciate it when their employers are actively committed to sustainability,\u201d says Veronica Magnusson. \nKarin Svensson Smith, president of the advocacy group Resen\u00e4rerna, also appears on the program. She explains that offering public transportation as an employee benefit kills two birds with one stone. \n\u201cOn the one hand, it expands the customer base for public transportation providers, and on the other, it makes things easier for those who must be physically present at work and cannot work from home. Focus on Autonomous Mobility<\/h2><\/div>
Stavanger Leads Europe in Fully Driverless Vehicles\u2014What's Happening in Sweden?\nVy\u2019s autonomous bus in Stavanger is now the first vehicle in Europe to operate entirely on its own, without a driver behind the wheel. The bus is also the only one of its kind to have traveled through a long tunnel without human intervention. You can hear about this and many other exciting developments in autonomous public transportation on Persontrafik. \nThe project involving the self-driving full-size bus in Stavanger, Norway, was launched by Vy Buss in 2022. Now, 20,000 kilometers and approximately 16,000 passengers later, it operates with an empty driver\u2019s seat. The safety driver, who previously sat up front in the bus, has moved to the back and only steps in if an unexpected situation arises, such as emergency roadwork. \n\n\nKai Kristoffersen, Project Manager for Autonomous Public Transportation at Vy Buss\n\n\n\"Our bus is the first vehicle in Europe to be authorized to operate without a driver behind the wheel,\" says a proud Kai Kristoffersen, project manager for autonomous public transportation at the Norwegian company Vy Buss.\n\nTo push the technology to its limits, Vy Buss has had the bus operate on a route in central Stavanger that alternates between cars, pedestrians, bike lanes, and roundabouts. There have been few problems, unlike the sister project in Gothenburg, which has been temporarily suspended since the autonomous bus was rear-ended by a tram. \nAhead of the move to remove the driver from behind the wheel in Stavanger, Vy Buss decided to transfer the bus to a commuter route that runs 80 percent on a dedicated lane. Eventually, the safety driver will be phased out entirely, explains Kai Kristoffersen. \n\n\"So far, this bus costs twice as much as a regular bus, and if we have to keep the driver on board, it won't be such a good business case. The goal is for the bus to be able to run almost around the clock without personnel costs. That's where we're headed,\" he says. \n\nThe bus in Stavanger is the only vehicle in Europe to have successfully traveled through a 700-meter-long tunnel without driver assistance.\n\nWe don\u2019t see any point in the bus if it doesn\u2019t fit into regular traffic, so the technology must also be able to handle things like tunnels. Now we\u2019ll see how the bus behaves\u2014and, not least, how pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles react to the fact that there\u2019s no driver. \u201cThere are many interesting phenomena we\u2019ll be exploring,\u201d says Kai Kristoffersen. \n\nOslo\u2019s public transit authority, Ruter, will also participate in this segment to provide an update on the project involving on-demand driverless vehicles in Groruddalen.\nAutonomous Vehicles in Sweden\nAnd what\u2019s happening in Sweden? Thomas Axelsson from Lindholmen Science Park and Drive Sweden will address this in two other program segments, one of which will feature the Swedish Transport Agency and V\u00e4sttrafik. Among other things, Thomas Axelsson will discuss the Transformation Map, a national initiative that brings together government agencies, cities, public transportation operators, and the business community to lay the groundwork for future autonomous mobility services in Sweden. \n\n\nThomas Axelsson, Lindholmen Science Park and Drive Sweden\n\n\nTechnological development is advancing rapidly on the international stage, but for Sweden to benefit from these developments, progress is also needed in the areas of regulation, governance, and collaboration. When Customers Get to Have a Say in Public Transportation<\/h2><\/div>
The art of listening to customers\r\nListening to customers when developing public transportation may sound like a given. But how do you do that in a way that actually leads to change? At Persontrafik, \u00d6stg\u00f6tatrafiken explains how they try to incorporate customer experiences and why the perspectives of young people, in particular, are so important. \r\nYoung People's Voices Shape the Future of Public Transportation\r\nWhen \u00d6stg\u00f6tatrafiken asked various passenger groups in a survey what improvements they would like to see on the \u00d6stg\u00f6tapendeln, one of the responses was: a gym car. This came in connection with a refurbishment of the trains, and was perhaps not quite what the transit company had expected. However, most of the feedback focused on more feasible measures, such as more comfortable seats and faster Wi-Fi. \r\n\r\n\r\n\"The survey was very well received; people felt that we were listening to them. Their feedback has been a key factor in our decision-making and in determining what we\u2019ve chosen to move forward with,\" says Mari Arnell, CX developer at \u00d6stg\u00f6tatrafiken. \r\nIn the session titled \u201cListen to the Customer,\u201d Mari Arnell will speak at Persontrafik about how she and her colleagues work on customer experiences in various ways. Among other things, they have a panel of about 400 young participants who, every other week, are asked a question about topics related to their travel. \r\nYoung people are our largest customer group, and they are also the ones who are most dissatisfied with public transportation. That\u2019s why we made an extra-large marketing effort to put together a panel of them. \u201cIf we\u2019re going to retain young people and get them to continue using public transportation, we need to listen to what they think is good and what they think could be improved,\u201d says Mari Arnell. \r\nThe travelers' perspective must have a greater impact\r\nOn Facebook, you can find numerous groups expressing their dissatisfaction with public transportation, such as \u201cPendelt\u00e5gsupproret\u201d and \u201cBroen live.\u201d But members often lack knowledge about how public transportation is organized, explains Karin Svensson Smith, chair of the national organization Resen\u00e4rerna. \r\n\r\n\r\nThey don\u2019t know who makes the decisions, which can lead to some rather odd reasoning. But neither the regional public transit authorities nor the transit companies are always very good at listening to their customers. Above all, the political parties need to do a better job of understanding what matters to public transit users, says Karin Svensson Smith, who previously served for many years on the Riksdag\u2019s Transport Committee and will moderate the panel discussion. \r\nThe organization Resen\u00e4rerna collects feedback and seeks to engage in dialogue with transportation authorities and operators. Punctuality is what people complain about most, but there is also dissatisfaction with the service offerings, explains Karin Svensson Smith. \r\n\r\nOne of her role models is Passagerarpulsen in Denmark, which for several years served as a voice for passengers in the development of public transportation. In the United Kingdom, there is the Campaign for Better Transport, which works to promote sustainable, affordable, and accessible public transportation systems. \r\n\"There, people discuss together how to improve conditions for both public transit users and those who operate the system. In Sweden, we are very far from that today,\" says Karin Svensson Smith. \r\nFor several years now, Resen\u00e4rerna has been selecting the country\u2019s best station based on transfer options, accessibility, service, and architecture\u2014factors that also play a role in travel.
